An Adventurous Day

Thursday, July 19th, 2007

After my long stint in Alaska, I decided I needed to take the day off (if you are a client, i’m back on track tomorrow!!). I never really take days off as I have said before. I emailed a few people and talked to a few clients, enough to make sure there were no immediate fires. After that, I got ready for a trip through the heart of Portland, out to the Apple store in Beaverton, and then back to North Portland (nopo) where I reside.

One might think this would be an easy trip at 1:30 in the afternoon, nope! Let’s start with the first stop on the agenda, the auto shop. I’m not going to name name’s as my fiancee’s cousin works there and they’ve been good about the situation as-so-far. But I have had to bring the car BACK for the third time for the exact same problem. My POS Jeep can’t seem to get fixed. This last time they had the car while I was in Alaska! Two Weeks! Today I picked it up, I was weary of it working at all.

When Your Tools Don’t Work

Tuesday, June 5th, 2007

I have to say, there isn’t anything more frustrating when the tools you use to work, just won’t work. I can’t imagine if I was building a building and the crane I was using just wouldn’t budge. I guess those workers are being paid on the hour, and are probably getting paid regardless if it’s working or not. Bad analogy.

Anyhow, what I am getting at is a few gripes I have with some of my tools. Today’s culprits are The Mighty Mouse and Firefox. When I first got The Mighty Mouse I fell in love with it. The mini scrollball and the elegance of two buttons in one were both big hits with me. However, as time goes on, I am starting to fall out of love with this piece of hardware. Firefox, when I first got it, had me singing its praises to anyone who would listen, however this too is falling by the way side.

How I found Jesus.

Friday, June 1st, 2007

On Saturday, May 26th, Danielle and I left our home in North Portland for a short camping trip with her family over near Bend, Oregon. That was the last time we saw Jesus, our cat. I don’t know if anyone has had a cat go missing before, but it’s a really sucky experience. Our dog Toula has been really sad the whole time, probably wondering if she was next on the chopping block. How do you tell your dog that Jesus left for Jesus?

Our friend came to our house on Sunday and gave Jesus plenty of spankings, as all cats love. That was the last time anyone we know had seen him. We came back home on Monday, and Jesus didn’t return. Concern became worry, worry became fear, and eventually we came to the conclusion our cat was gone.

Finished Trellises

Tuesday, May 15th, 2007

Yesterday I wrote a post about my gardening and my cool bamboo trellises I was building. The problem is, I needed more trellises and I ran out of bamboo. I felt like it would be really half cocked to have two bamboo trellises and two pine trellises. So late last night after a meeting I headed to Lowes.

I don’t know about the Lowes hardware where everyone else lives, but the one in North Portland suckkks. Especially if you go there around 7pm on a week night. Nobody knows anything and it’s impossible to find an employee. Luckily I went in knowing this, because I was searching for some fringe stuff; cargo net, wood stakes, and cat repellent.

Green Thumbs

Monday, May 14th, 2007

George, my name, means farmer or to farm. Today I did just that. After a few meetings this morning I decided to take the hot (81 degrees farenheit!) afternoon and spend it planting my vegetables in my garden. Keep in mind I have never done this before. I’ve had starters going for the last few months, and for the most part they are doing ok.

There used to be some bamboo that wouldn’t transplant in my backyard, which I stripped of branches and intended to use to support my tomatoes and cucumbers. And fortunately, Toula girl chewed them up even more, so now they are really sturdy; I hope.

Anyhow, a couple pics after the jump of my raised beads and bamboo trellis (still some netting to hang, but baby steps for this one.

american healthcare: a usability exercise

Friday, May 11th, 2007

Danielle, my girlfriend, has a migraine headache. She is lying in bed, sensitive to light, movement, and any other form of sensory perception. Thank goodness she can’t read my mind, I am a shitty caretaker. With this migraine being worse than the one before, and the one before being worse than the one before, Danielle, who is afraid of needles, has opted to track down a doctor to give her a shot.

The problem is, her normal doctor’s office is closed today. Any new doctors she would like to see require a three week wait time for new patients. That leaves us with a handful of emergency/urgent care facilities in the Portland area.

This shouldn’t be to hard to compile a list right?

feeling like robinhood

Tuesday, March 27th, 2007

Here’s a short story I heard about someone who knows someone who knows someone. We’ll call him Tom (he’s everyone’s friend). Tom was approached by someone very close to him, who happened to be a volunteer for a children’s cancer organization, we’ll call her Pamela. There also happened to be a little girl in this story, Katie. Katie is five years of age and has brain cancer.

Katie told Pamela she loved a few of the shows and movies from the Disney Kids Channel. High School Musical happened to be a particular favorite of hers, and she was told by Pamela that it wouldn’t be too hard to obtain that album, as well as a few others off the internet. Pamela then proceeded to ask Tom (who was a geek) to find the albums on everyone’s favorite file sharing resource, bittorrent.

time to get free

There is a bad habit floating around my fingers which lends to me constantly blogging about…my work and my busyness. it’s funny, I called my sister once only to get her answering machine, which said, “I am really busy right now so leave a message.” I remember thinking, yea we’re all busy, what about it. Now here I am with a blog, and the only topic that keeps running across my mind is how busy I am. What about it?

Happy New Year

Tuesday, January 2nd, 2007

I am a few days late in getting this one up, but hey it was tough to get back on my blogging horse this time for some reason. I spent the last five days over at Cannon Beach on the Oregon Coast. It’s such a beautiful place, the weather was good, and I got to disconnect for a few days. Every so often I am graced with reflection time. It felt good.

I have never been the kind of person to have New Year’s Resolutions, or at least nothing I admit to myself or admit openly. However, maybe that’s why some of my personal flaws keep hanging around. For some reason this year, I feel a bit more bold. In addition to my personal goals, what follows are a few of those things I would like to see in 2007.

level of difficulty – part one

Wednesday, November 29th, 2006

Life is a beautiful hustle. Last night I launched my second site in two weeks. Both sites are built using WordPress. Both sites had a little bit of a learning curve in building them. Both sites are for people who have an admirable attention to detail.

On a scale of one to ten, I think my level of difficulty is about a 6. I’m a little burnt out from the constant work, but as always launches are gratifying.

The first site was to help a good friend of mine, Nicholas Galanin, launch his site to showcase his work as well as earn a little cheddar. Nobody likes to see a starving artist. Especially one with a baby. Congrats mate.

The second site was also to help a good friend of mine, Theresa Tran. She is leaving Nike on Dec. 1 to start a small marketing firm. Be sure to check out the Tease Marketing site. The design was a collaboration between a few people. The branding was handled by Erik Ries, the site design by Jeff Reynolds, the flash by Steve James, and the wordpress/html/css install by myself.

I do enjoy the collaboration by so many hustlers. Check out Tease Marketing.

Now less busy so back to the blogging.
