Here’s a short story I heard about someone who knows someone who knows someone. We’ll call him Tom (he’s everyone’s friend). Tom was approached by someone very close to him, who happened to be a volunteer for a children’s cancer organization, we’ll call her Pamela. There also happened to be a little girl in this story, Katie. Katie is five years of age and has brain cancer.
Katie told Pamela she loved a few of the shows and movies from the Disney Kids Channel. High School Musical happened to be a particular favorite of hers, and she was told by Pamela that it wouldn’t be too hard to obtain that album, as well as a few others off the internet. Pamela then proceeded to ask Tom (who was a geek) to find the albums on everyone’s favorite file sharing resource, bittorrent.
It took about an hour but Tom was able to pull three albums off of bittorrent and burn them to cds for Katie. After being in the hospital for a week in half with difficulties related to her cancer, Tom and Pamela both hoped Katie would be cheered up by receiving these cds.
Katie was indeed thrilled, Pamela was happy to use her network to obtain some highly sought after music, and Tom was thrilled to take from the greedy to give to the poor. And Katie was indeed poor, but she could have been anyone in the world for those few hours she listened to the Disney soundtracks on her mattress on the floor of her Grandmother’s apartment.
I hope the RIAA doesn’t go after Tom, but if they knew about this incident, they probably would. Nobody is safe. Do the right thing, don’t buy music from the RIAA. Here is a safe list of labels who aren’t associated with the RIAA.
Put your money towards these children with cancer.
